I think it is a good way to collaborate with other people. We will be exploring it more so stay tune we might have some other ideas of how we can use it.

Last week we had a Matariki celebration week. On Friday the whole school had a sharing assembly where we share our learning. We had a time when the Two oldest kids came together with the Two youngest kids and planted a tree. We also had a Teachers vs Bulls basketball game.

It was a good game but unfortunately the Teachers won.

Last week we celebrated Matariki. We found out information about Matariki like what does Matariki mean? Matariki means "tiny eyes" and Mata ariki means "eyes of god". For Matariki we had tofa and tamati and mohammed and zamond who planted some trees. We also faced the staff at a game of basketball the bulls basketball team tied against the teachers with 10 goals each, but the teachers thought that they got 200 goals. We had a shared lunch and we also had a Matariki assembly, at the Matariki assembly some people shared their pepeha with the school and others showed what they had learnt about Matariki. We also learnt that Matariki is a small cluster of seven stars that shines on a certain day in winter at dawn.

On the 17th of june we had a teachers vs studends basket ball game in the end it was a draw as both teams scored lots . We also had an assembly and diffrent classes shared what they had learnt about matariki .

Last week roslyn school celebrated Matariki. The 2 oldest people(Tofa, Mohammed)and the 2 youngest people(Zamond, Tamati)all planted a tree each. Tofa and Tamati were paired up and Mohammed and Zamond were paired up. After that the Bulls basketball team vs Teachers. The teachers got lots of goals at first then the bulls team started to shoot a lot of hoops but at the end it was a tie of 10 but the teachers thought they got 200.

I learnt that matariki is seven stars. People say that Matariki is the mother with six daughters. Matariki is a time for harvesting food for the winter. I also learnt that matariki is about celebrating with family and friends and also sharing ideas. Last Friday roslyn school had a celebration. The two oldest and the two youngest which were Tofa, Mohammed, Tamate and Zamone planted some plants to celebrate matariki. Straight after that the teachers and the year 7 and 8 bulls basketball team had a basketball game on the court i think the teachers won. Then at 2 o'clock we had matariki asembly and room 5 hosted it. That was a very cool fun day.

Cross Country

My heart was beating as loud as a drum every time I ran up those big, steep stairs from inside the pitt. The ground was so muddy it was squishy like a slimy snake. I ran as hard as I could. It was a fantastic day even though it was raining. I couldn't stop running even though my feet were sore. The whole team were down at Skoglund park last friday for our annual cross country run, we ran in our Year groups while the rest watched and cheered us all on in the cold, wet, drizzle. We didn't care... cos that was the fun part. We didn't think it was much fun at the time but when we got back to school and warmed up we talked about the morning and the fun we had.

Wacky Character Hair Day - Coin Donation from All

Hi guys please support our fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It would be great if everyone brought a gold coin to support this fantastic Cause. We also have a couple of stalls that will be run by the Student Council. Our team of councillors will be creating Wacky hair for $1 or $2 if you want accessories. coloured spray, gel, or pipecleaners put through. They also have a lolly jar filled with lollies, $1 a guess, if you guess the correct amount you win the whole lot, There will also be a best costume competition, if you win you could get a prize. $1 to enter and the councillors will take your picture, then 50c a vote. The winner will be anounced at the end of the day or Monday. So donate a coin for the day and then invest some more coins with the student council. All proceeds go to help the Wespac Rescue Helicopter...

Wow! It's that time again where we spend the week celebrating Literacy. We love Literacy week in Room 5. Tomorrow we hope that all students will bring a gold coin donation towards the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. We are using our character day as a Wacky Hair day too to help fundraise for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The School that raises the most might win a visit from Richie McCaw. That would be awesome! So please support by sending in a gold coin donation or even a larger donation....

Visit from Norm Hewitt

Norm Hewitt is a really inspiring person. He talked to us about animal cruelty and how it is related to domestic violence. His presentation was called 'one of the family' and he is working with the SPCA, Shelly Ryan was also there working with Mr Hewitt to present to us, She actually works for the SPCA in Auckland. He told us lots of stories about how he grew up as a boy, his own pets and the things they do with them, he was a crack up but the stories he told really got us thinking about stuff. He also gave out some really cool prizes. Thanks Mr Hewitt for coming to our school... I really enjoyed learning about animals and thinking about the important things in looking after them.

VISIT FROM NORM HEWITT

Last week Norm Hewitt came to Roslyn School to speak to our team, Te Roopu Arohanui which are our Year 7 & 8 Classes. He talked to us about domestic violence, animals and the SPCA and the role they play. He also talked about animal cruelty, this was horrific but reality.

Norm Hewitt? Who is he? Well in case you are wondering who Norm Hewitt is... he was an All Black, and most recently a competitor on "Dancing with the Stars", He actually won the competition over all. Wow! what an achievement, He did say you need to have dreams... which he did... and he has had many successess.

Anyway getting back to the presentation, it was awesome, Mr Hewitt was so funny but the stories he told us were quite sad. So many people abuse animals, they also abuse people in their families. I hope our team thought long and hard about the things we learnt and help make change. So many people don't take care of their animals to the point of neglect, this is really sad, if you don't love your pets enought to really take care of them, you should give them to someone who will or the SPCA... If you are wanting to adopt a pet the SPCA always has lots of animals needing good homes. Check it out!! Thank you to Shelly Ryan (SPCA) and Norm Hewitt for a wicked presentation and the things we learnt, also for the things we need to think about... We hope you come back again. Nga mihi ki a korua....

Visit from Norm Hewitt
AWESOME!!! Norm Hewitt gave us a cool presentation that really inspired us and talked to us about Animal cruelty. He also talked to us about his life and how things were when he grew up. We couldn't imagine $5 buying a packet of 'fishnchips' to feed a family of 7, but in 1976 it did. How awesome that would be if we still could. He is a really funny person and he loves animals. He really made us feel that anyone can set dreams and achieve them. He also gave out cool prizes to people who were able to answer questions. The T-Shirts were awesome and had a maori tohu on them. We would also like to thank Shelly Ryan from the SPCA for giving us the chance to hear Mr Hewitt. Thanks a lot and we hope you come back and visit.

NORM HEWITT

Last week Mr Norm Hewitt came to Roslyn School. Mr Hewitt talked to us about domestic violence and Animal Cruelty. He also shared some things about his own life and growing up. This presentation was really powerful and everyone was in to it. Mr Hewitt was a crack up as he was so expressive when he was telling us his life stories, everyone cracked up. This presentation was only with our Year 7 & 8 students because some of the things discussed are quite horrific especially some of the things people do to animals. There are 5 main things people need to do when caring for animals, they are called the 5 Freedoms:

1. Caring & protect

2. Provide shelter and warmth
3. Take them to the Vet if they are sick
4. Give them food and nutrition

5. Exercise - Take dogs for walks!!

Transactional Writing - Arguments

We can all argue very well when we want to but how well can we write an argument. We often have squabbles with our friends and others and use lots of evidence to suggest we are right but are we really effective in persuading others to change their opinion.

This term we have been learning a little bit about argument writing and how to structure one better. We wrote an argument about television my was called television and do we need it????. First we did our planning, We had to craft a brainstorm or make a comparison chart of two points of view, for and against. My opinion is that we don't need television, it is not a necessity because they are one of the main causes to carbon foot prints. I am so against the distruction of our planet and think that we need to think smart on issues that affect the environment. What is your opinion? Do you think Television is a need? Why do you think this??

Welcome Back for Term 2

Nga mihi ki a koutou katoa me nga whanau o Roslyn. Wow! Last term just went so fast. Week One and the kids are enjoying being back in the swing of things. We have an exciting term lined up with lots of exploration into the world of Science. "Wonders of Our World" is our inquiry into science which will lead into independent inquiries by students. They will explore a wondering they have and test those theories using the Scientific Method. We will be holding a Science Expo early next term showcasing their learning. Students are learning how to take effective notes through the use of current events where students present and article or news item they have explored or enjoyed. While these students present their article using effective speaking behaviours the rest of the class take notes and then have to choose one of three articles that interested them to use. They use their notes to create a paragraph using their own words. This appears to be a tough skill for some students while others are enjoying the practice. Anyway stay tuned for lots more exciting news to share with you all.

Yesterday our Te Roopu Arohanui Swim Team participated at the Northern Cluster Swimming Sports, it was really cool. Our team did really well and many of them made it into finals which was awesome. They had a good day with Whaea Maryanne and enjoyed swimming and competing against other schools. Well done Team, we are all proud of you.

This is a quick clip I put together about our trip to Highland Home in Week 4. This is our leadership Overnight that we go on each year with our class. Our team goes away at the start of each year, and we have two days and one night there to bond and learn to work together and connect as a class. It was a lot of fun, we really did connect as a class. My favourite thing was the grub fishing..We were searching for grubs up in the top grass area...hard case....you had to be there Isuppose. Anyway enjoy my clip.

Highland Home Leadership Retreat

Wow!! what an awesome time we had at Highland Home last week. Room 5 went to Highland Home last Thursday and really had a blast. We would like to thank Willie Mason, Viti Barker, and Sophie Wolfert for being parent helpers on our camp, without your support we would not have been able to go. When we arrived out at Highland Home which is in the heart of the Pohangina Valley we set up our bunks and then had a briefing upstairs in the lounge. We had a bit of morning tea and then got stuck into some orienteering. It was cool, we had to use a map and skills of orienteering to locate specific tasks. They were hardcase, especially when we had to as team walk on 3 legs and two arms. We were trying out lots of different ways to do this and then we had it sussed.. once we thought we had completed the activity we had to go and see Whaea Maryanne at the judges station and perform the task, she then marked us out of 50. We did lots of team building activities over the two days. It was really good because when we reflected on our efforts we really could see what our strengths were and definately our weaknesses. We will continue to develop our strengths and talents but most of all we would like to focus on improving our weaknesses. We liked all the activities they were fun, even the tramp was pretty cool, we sang in the bush and then made our way to the river where we made mini rafts out of natural resources and raced against the other teams. One of our most favourite activities was the Marshmallow Pit where we performed skits, laughed and ate smores.....MMMMmmmm toasted marshmallows slapped between two chocolate biscuits... The Burma Trail was really scarey, especially when Willie had been telling stories about it all day, we were pretty freaked out but deep down knew it was a fake story because we know the whaea Maryanne and the parents wouldn't put us in any danger whatsoeva, but it was still scarey. We were all glad we did it though. All in all what a fantastic time, we wish we could do it again.............
